Food Security and Urban Gardening
The Opportunity Door is developing a community-centered program to help address food insecurity in Washington, DC's Wards 7 and 8. The program will focus on helping residents explore practical ways to grow fresh food in and around their homes, prepare healthy and enjoyable meals, and connect with resources that support long-term health and food access.
What We Are Exploring
- Indoor hydroponic growing systems for houses, apartments and other small living spaces.
- Container gardening and other creative methods for growing food with limited outdoor space.
- Basic education on planting, growing, maintaining, and harvesting fresh herbs and produce.
- Healthy, affordable, and delicious cooking demonstrations.
- Meal planning, food storage, and ways to reduce household food waste.
- Nutrition education presented in practical, easy-to-understand language.
- Connections to community gardens, food-distribution organizations, urban agriculture programs, and other local resources.
- Opportunities for residents to build confidence, share knowledge, and strengthen community connections.
- Possible starter supplies, demonstrations, workshops, and other support based on available funding, resources, and confirmed partnerships.
Who the Program Is Being Developed For
This program is being developed for adults and families in Washington, DC, with an initial focus on residents of Wards 7 and 8 who are experiencing food insecurity or want practical ways to grow and prepare healthy food at home.
